About Library

The Central Library at IIIT Ranchi is a window to the world of the latest information in Engineering, Technology, Humanities, and Sciences. As an integral part of the academic and research ecosystem of the campus, the Library provides comprehensive information services to support the teaching, learning, research, and outreach activities of the Institute by creating state-of-the-art facilities and offering innovative services. It caters to the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars, faculty members, and staff across various departments and research facilities.

Central Library uses the Open-Source SoftwareKOHA for Library Automation and all housekeeping operations as well as services rendered to the users.

Library Rules and Regulations

General Rules

• All students, faculty members, and employees of the Institute are entitled to library membership.
• Users must carry their Library Membership Card while using the library and produce their Institute ID card on demand.
• Members are required to keep their personal belongings outside the library at their own risk. The library shall not be responsible for any loss or damage.
• As the Library is a place for individual study and research, members are requested to maintain decorum, dignity, peace, and silence within the library premises.
• Books and other library materials taken from the shelves must be left on the table. Replacing the books on the shelves is not encouraged as it may get misplaced. A misplaced book is like a lost book.
• Readers should not mark, underline, dog-ear pages, write, tear pages, or otherwise damage any library materials.
• Use of personal stereos, music systems, audible use of mobile phones, smoking, and consumption of food, snacks, or beverages inside the library is strictly prohibited.
• Newspapers, magazines, and journals must be read only in the designated areas and should not be taken to any other reading sections.
• Borrowers are instructed to check library materials for missing pages, damage, or markings before borrowing.
• Damaged materials will not be accepted at the time of return. In cases of mutilation, writing, scribbling, marking, or page cutting, the borrower may be required to replace the item or face appropriate penalties.
• Borrowing privileges may be restricted or suspended in cases of misbehavior or misuse of library facilities or materials.
• Faculty members and staff proceeding on long leave (with or without pay), deputation, study leave, or extraordinary leave must return all borrowed materials before leaving the Institute.
• No library material may be taken out of the library without proper authorization. Unauthorized removal of library property will be treated as theft and dealt with accordingly.
• The Library reserves the right to recall any issued material at any time.
• These rules are subject to revision from time to time without prior notice. The competent authority reserves the right to take decisions in the interest of the Library or the Institute.

Library Membership

Students, Faculty members, Officers and staff of the Institute are required to enroll as members of the library upon joining the Institute by filling out the membership form available at the Library Circulation Desk, along with a passport-size photograph. Library membership entitles users to access the resources and services offered for academic and research purposes. An Institute Identity Card is mandatory for the issue and return of library materials.

Circulation

Library Borrowing Privileges

All students, faculty members, officers and staff of the Institute are entitled to borrow library materials. Their borrowing entitlement, in terms of the number of items that may be issued, is as follows:

Overdue Fine for Late Return of Book(s):

Users have to return the books within the stipulated period. A fine of 2 (two) rupees per day per bookwill be charged from the defaulting members.User(s) has to return all issued books when he/ she is out of station for more than fifteen days.

Renewal of Books:

If a loaned book is not reserved by other users, the concerned user is allowed to renew it a maximum of three (3) consecutive times. Renewal can be done through the Library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) (Currently accessed only within the BSNL campus through the Institute's Network) or with the assistance of library at the circulation counter. The Library reserves the right to recall any issued book at any time, if the need arises.

Reservation/Hold of Book(s):

Each member has a privilege to reserve or hold a maximum of two books, if the same are borrowed by other user of the Central Library. The reservation of book(s) can be done through Library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) (Currently accessed only within the BSNL campus through the Institute's Network) or with the help of library at the circulation counter.
