Ranchi is the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Ranchi has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. IIIT Ranchi is located in Namkum which is at the outskirts of Ranchi City and belongs to Khijri Assembly Constituency. Most parts of the total area are considered rural since it is in the outskirts of the city. Situated in the eastern end of Ranchi, Namkum has a large cover of forests and arable land. But these are being depleted to give space to the expanding city.


Airways

The Airport at Ranchi is known as Birsa Munda Airport, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Birsa Munda Airport, also known as Ranchi Airport, is the primary domestic airport serving the city of Ranchi. It is named after Indian tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda and is currently managed by Airports Authority of India. The airport is located in Hinoo, approximately 11.8km from the Institute.

Subhash Chandra Bose Domestic & International Airport, Kolkata. It is an international airport located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is 410km away from Ranchi. The best way of travelling between Ranchi and Kolkata is by flight. The flight journey takes about an hour. By the train it takes 6 - 7 hours. By road it takes about 8 - 9 hours.


Railways

Ranchi Junction railway station, station code RNC, is the railway station serving the capital city of Ranchi in the Ranchi district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Ranchi Station is also the headquarters of the Ranchi division of the South Eastern Railway Zone of the Indian Railway. The Ranchi Junction railway station is connected to most of the major cities in India by the railway network, viz., Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Raipur, Patna, Nagpur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, Ranchi, Pune, Jammu, Vishakapatnam, Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar etc.It is well connected to Kharagpur and Howrah Junctions through over a dozen of super-fast/express/local trains.
